The Printed Image: Prints, Photos, Digital Art
At first I knew what photos were of course, but I was unsure what digital art or prints was really referring to. I skipped to the digital art portion of the chapter looking for an explanation and then I looked up digital art on the Internet and immediately I was amazed. The fact that an artist can do that sort of art strictly through the computer and make it look so realistic is unreal. I can definitely see how this is an up and coming form of art seeing how computers and technology have become more prominent in the last decade or so, so I think it is amazing how new this art form is. I definitely have such an appreciation for this art.
As for photography I have always love taking photos and seeing other photographers’ photos. I think it is so beautiful how someone can capture moments with the click of a camera. The one thing I sort of have a problem with when it comes to photography is Photoshop. I can understand maybe editing a picture a little bit to eliminate blemishes and little things but the part I can’t stand about the photo industry is the way that take a person’s body and transform it until it is completely different than the original photo. I think it’s wrong and the way a person’s body is should not be subjected to change through a computer screen.
Prints do not fascinate me as much as the other two but I still think it should be an appreciated art form and it definitely takes as much effort if not more to create these beautiful pieces of art.

The first time I was really introduced to art was through my cousins. I had seen art obviously, but I had never been up close and personal with the process or actual artists. My cousins are twins and they are both into art. They went to the same college and were into animation, photography, and drawing. They were amazing. What I found really cool about what they did was taking their drawings that they did on the computer and make them into animations that are actually moving on screen. They are also really into photography. They are now living in LA right now where they work as photographers and videographers. They still have amazing drawing abilities too. But I was really inspired by what they do. I think photography is amazing. I think it is a very relatable art form. It doesn’t take so much reading into because the theme is right there in front of you, so it is very accessible to every age, gender, any kind of person. My mom is an amazing photographer. She keeps it mostly as a hobby but she really has a knack for it. She is always taking pictures and to her it is capturing memories that she will keep with her forever. I think that is a special quality about photography. You are capturing a moment in real life. You are taking a sliver of your life that will be preserved forever. I took a photography class in high school and that is when I realized what a true art form photography is. It is so much harder than I imagined. You have to catch the right lighting, set the camera just right, and make sure your form is in the correct proportions for the best looking picture.
Another form of printed image is digital art. I think it is amazing how far art as come. It has burst into the 21st century and art is now being created on the computer. I think that is really cool. There are so many different art forms and I think it is really cool that there is another art form that comes from the computer. You have so many opportunities when you are working on the computer. You can layer images, adjust the transparency of layers, create text, use images from the Internet, and make a really cool collage that is only one layer. I don’t think I would be as interested as trying this more digital form of art. I really like the results, but I really like using my hands and maybe getting a little messy while creating.
I really like when prints are created using paint. I am really interested in screen-printing. My cousins would do a lot of screen-printing on t-shirts and they would create their own designs, they use ink and print them on a t-shirt. I really would like to try that. I think it would e really cool to take your own designs and create a t-shirt or a printed fabric. I always wanted to be a fabric designer when I was younger. I thought the idea was really cool. Creating your own patterns and designs that you could make into clothing, accessories, bags, quilts, anything sounded really cool to me.

I have always been entranced by the idea of the printed image and photography ever since I was very young. There are countless home videos of myself grabbing for the video recorded, and even more blurry photos taken by the hands of a 5 year old who knew she loved cameras (although did not exactly know how to use them). My freshmen year of middle school my parents bought me my first DSLR camera. I had never been so in love with the idea of capturing moments in a clear and almost life like way. For the next four years I began my constant struggle of never having enough space on my computer due to my excess photo taking. This year I have decided to turn this hobby into more than just that. I will begin my core concentration in photography next half in Florence Italy. I found this chapter incredibly interesting not only because of my obvious ties I have made to photography, but the information I learned was also incredibly fascinating. I was completely unaware that bill gates had saved an array of printed images and digitized many of them. Many famous photographs we have today have been preserved thanks to his dedication in keeping them in tact.
Photography does not only have artistic value but also has an abundance of historic value as well. Photography assists our exploration of the past and turns written events, and famous historical figures into a reality for those who study history. A well known quote that has been used to describe the power of photography states that, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” I find this quote incredibly accurate because without photography many historical figures would just be words written on a page.
This chapter also taught me about other genres of photography that I was previously unaware of. From photojournalism to documentary there are so many genres in which photography can be incorporated.

To be honest I don’t consider taking pictures as an art, but I do understand how it could be one. I also think it’s hard to consider photographs or printed images as art because with today’s technology and computers it’s hard to keep track of who did what and anyone can just look up a picture of whatever they want and claim they took it.
I can give some reasons as to how it could be considered art for certain reasons. I know some people who are very passionate about photography will put them in the most difficult positions just to get the right picture, the right lighting or the right angle. This can sometimes be tough to do by yourself, the only thing s that many people have ruined photography. Many people will consider themselves photographers because they take selfies or add filters to some pictures they take.
Something that I found interesting in the reading was how it said that the printed image has been around for the past 5 centuries, which I didn’t realize. It completely slipped my mind that back in the day, around Benjamin Franklin’s time they used a printing press to make several newspapers, sometimes involving illustrations/printed images. I also thought that Phillip hit home when he said, “With digital photography, the halo of originality has disappeared entirely” (P.110). This is so true. Many people only take pictures just so they can post them and get likes, most people don’t enjoy the sights anymore and it’s almost effortless to take a picture when all you have to do is point and click. I also think photos kill originality because almost every photo has been taken before and it’s very hard to come up with a creative idea. I’m personally not a fan of taking pictures because I’d rather live in the moment and usually my friends take pictures, so I just keep whatever they have. It’s nice to have pictures, but some people are just ridiculous when it comes to taking pictures. I don’t think it’s necessary to constantly be taking pictures, when you can just watch it or see something for yourself.

    The Printed Image

The printed image, more specifically photography has had a large impact on my life mostly due to my father. My father considers himself a photographer. Although he no longer works for a magazine, in his youth he was a fashion photographer for a 1980s magazine that no longer exists. We used to have a dark room in the basement of our summer home, unfortunately we do not still own this house but I can still remember the smell the darkroom had. I have always considered photography art especially if one uses a darkroom to develop the photos. A darkroom allows for artistic choice and each print is not likely to come out the same every time.

I have always known about the advantageous of the printing press. Throughout school our teachers have taught us it allowed for the mass production of books, which made it easier to learn and be more knowledgeable about the world around you. I never really thought about it as a tool to create art, but it makes perfect sense that it is. One might even be able to argue it is more art then a printing out a photograph. Each block used on the printing press had to be individually carved to fit the image you wish to print. In this regard the art would be the block used for printing and the image would be the imprint the block left on piece of paper.

I have a harder time getting behind digital prints being art. Because the “art” is captured on a digital photograph all you have to do is print it out. This makes me wonder what the art actually is? Is it the printed out image? Is it the image stored on the camera? Or is it the moment you chose to capture on the camera? Personally, I believe the latter is the actual art. To complicate the matter further, another problem that arises with digital art, something this chapter pointed out and I completely agree with, is because a photo is captured digitally it allows for manipulation. If a photo is manipulated then the finial product is no longer a representation of the moment you chose to capture. Thus making the moment not the art. That being said I enjoy printed images, whether they be digital prints, block prints, or photos conceived in a dark room. I just do not know where I draw the line between art and image.

The printed image is a form of art everyone is exposed to at least once. More and more people are exposed to the printed image through the internet. Originally the printed image was only viewable through recreation through print shops and the original piece. Photography is really one of my favorite forms of art. There is just something about it, capturing a moment. You can only do it with such precision in painting. But with a photograph it is exact. Anyone can photograph really it is not about skill too much. Just angle and lighting are the big two pieces. That is kind of why I like photography because the fact anyone can do it. I mean there is still the difference between a good photograph and a bad one. Like no one is going to say a really blurry photo is any good. But the whole point that photos can be altered is another issue. They can add to artistic value of a piece but in my opinion they are a separate category and should be made clear as such. It is unethical in art to say it is a photo when it is photo shopped.
Photo shopping a photo takes more skill than actual photography because it requires more knowledge. That knowledge elevates the photo in some senses. But usually photo shop is used in a way to make it obvious that the piece is not a natural photo. I have seen some crazy things done with photo editing that I could never do.
At the same time though I think that not all photography is art. A person has to think it is art for it to be art. It really is convoluted I think it has more of a strict scrutiny on it because of the fact photography takes less effort and everyone has a camera at the tip of their fingers now on their phones. So maybe it is less valued as we see more and more pictures online of people taking pictures with their phones.

  9. I love pictures. I love being able to take pictures and look back at them later on and be able to remember things about them. I like that you can remember things that are seen in the picture but you can also remember things that are even physically pictured. I love looking at picture from vacations or adventures with my friends and remembering things about that day and experiences that I had with the people who mean most to me.
My mom secretly wishes she was a photographer instead of working in insurance. That being said, every part of my childhood is documented. All my birthdays, my brother’s soccer games, family vacations, everything is documented. At some points during my childhood I would hate how often she had a camera in her hand and I remember in my stage of thinking I knew everything that I would constantly tell her to live in a moment and she was like you’ll thank me one day. I have recently grown to appreciate the pictures because I get to look back and remember things.
“A picture’s worth a thousand words.” I truly believe that saying. I think that any image whether its of a family or it’s a painting or of an object or landscape it has more meaning that just ink on a paper. I believe that sometimes people over look printed images. Personally I forget all the time that a printed image isn’t just a photograph. It can be a painting in an art gallery or something on the web. Printed imagery allows for much more communication between people on a local level with their friends and family as well as on a global level. Imagery allows people in different countries to communicate with each other about what its like to live their life as well as helping with issues such as violence in the Middle East. If it weren’t for printed imagery a lot of people would have no knowledge for the extent of the violence over there. They would know that something was happening but without imagery they wouldn’t understand the extent of it.

Photography is easily one of the most common art forms we see every day. We are surrounded by images; in textbooks, on our phones, billboards, ads, and so much more. Images have been around for more than 30,000 years and over that time the way these pictures are created has changed drastically. Through the development of the printing press, creation of cameras and computers, images have become more and more accessible. This is the reason I like photography so much; anyone can take a photo and share it with whomever they want.

However, I do think there is a big difference between professional photography and taking photos for instagram. Professional photography requires a lot of thought; you need to see which angles you want to use, the lighting, the positions of the people or objects in the image and so much more. Everyday people don’t think this much about pictures when they are capturing a moment. Professionals know the focus of their images when they are taking them because they were most likely hired by someone to do that exact thing. Regular people capture moments at random times. I once read a quote that read, “If you want to learn what someone fears losing, watch what they photograph.” I like this quote because people are always trying to remember their favorite moments and tend to do so with a photograph. You want to remember these happy moments so that if you’re ever feeling down you can look at them and relieve that moment and feel that happiness again.

In high school one of my friends would always carry around her professional camera and take pictures of everything we ever did. At the time it was super annoying but now I’m thankful because I can look back on those photos and remember some amazing times that probably would have slipped my mind if it wasn’t photographed. Photography is an amazing art form because one photograph can mean so much and I think that’s amazing.

  11. The Printed Image

Printed Image I feel is the one type of art that has become the most popular and is known by almost everybody. Looking back to the past printed images were a hassle to create, because camera used film instead of the chip with a certain amount of gigabytes that we have today. You had to get the pictures developed and sometimes you didn't even know how some actually turned out because it was on a reel and you couldn't delete them. Today we have a lot of different types of camera that we can use to take pictures, and most of them can even take videos. This is my favorite type of art because you can say so much with just one picture and it doesn’t require some sort of artistic ability to properly take a good picture. Thanks to the Internet there is another way to get any picture you might want, all it takes is to put the word you want and you can get a variety of different pictures that somehow relate to your search. The greatest things about pictures are that they capture moments of time that express emotion, whenever I look back to an old photo album I can’t help but smile at all the good times I had in the past. Unlike a painting Photographs are clear and usually express what's actually happening in the photo, while paintings and other types of art are all opinionated everyone thinks of something different when they see it, but that's not the case for printed images. What is cool about photo’s is that sometimes you don’t even need to be at the place where the photo was taken to understand what is happening in the photograph. Pictures are another kind of art one that is based off of emotions and experiences, and look how much photography has changed in the 21st century, just imagine how much different photography could be different in the 22nd.

  12. Photography and printed images is the art form that I am most familiar and interested in. I have worked with film and digital cameras throughout high school, taking extra electives and after school classes. I became very familiar with the work and often got chosen by my teacher for shows and contests. I enjoyed using film and printing in the black room because it was an experience not many people got and I was able to play around and make the art I wanted to. I thought digital photography was more of my style, I would take a photograph and upload it on to the computer and use Photoshop to edit the picture, either into an entirely different image or just to enhance certain elements. I fully enjoy looking at images whether digital or film, I am able to relate the most to them and understand them.

I was taught that the image had to be printed in order to be complete. Once we finished editing or developed the picture, it was required to print and matte the picture with a border that supported the piece. Therefore, I think photography has an original piece. Yes pictures are easier to share online, which only makes them more accessible. Now society is privileged enough to not have to go to a museum in a different country to see a famous piece of art. The book argues that this takes away from an element all other art has, but personally I believe it is more helpful, making it easier for more people to enjoy the work.

Film pictures are different than digital photographs because the way an artist chooses to develop a photograph changes the outcome of the piece. Therefore once a piece is developed through the chemicals the art has that originality that it shares with sculptures and painting and other artwork. Yes, a person such as Bill Gates can take these photographs and upload them on to a hard drive but I think it would be the same as uploading an image of a sculpture. This being said, I think film photography has that originality that the book is discussing more than digital photography does.

I do not believe one type of photography is more artistic than the other. I think the originality of film makes it special in its own way but being able to share and change a photograph is what makes digital photography so interesting.

Digital photography includes the use of Photoshop and now you can never be sure if the image you see is edited and to what extent. As the book discussed the image on the cover of national geographic magazine was altered to be able to see more than one pyramid in a single image. I think this is still considered art because it was a photograph and the artists adapted it to their own needs and preferences. I agree with the book that the digital photographs are more unreliable but a person should look at it, as art more of evidence unless it is said to be factual.

This week our reading about the printed image. This is one of the forms of art that I consider to be most relatable to me. I am much more familiar with photography than say, dance or theater. I took photography and digital photo in high school so i am comfortable with the process of not only taking photos, but editing them and using photoshop as well.

I do believe that printed image is art. It is more difficult that I think many people believe that it is. Though i have taken classes and love taking pictures, I still feel as though it is very difficult to do. I cannot even say that i am amazing at it, despite how much i enjoy doing it. People who are very good photographers have such a fine eye for it.

I feel as though images can capture so much. We always talk about the deeper meaning of the pieces we look at, and i feel as though the printed image can ofter display such deep meaning. The photographer has their own idea of what the photo is representing, however many photos allow for the audience to look deeper and question the meaning and what is being represented.

For a while, I wanted to be a journalist and along with that I wanted to be a photographer as well. I obviously have decided against this, however during that time, I became extremely interested in photography and the printed image and I am always amazing by the work of some well known photographers.

Ch. 8 The Printed Image Chapter Reflection

We see photography everywhere almost as much as we hear music everywhere. It's another very commonly seen and used art form out in the world. From textbooks to posters and billboards, we see printed images everyday.

Printed images were obviously not always around in the world. It wasn't until we had the technology to capture an image did this art form start. This occurred about 5 centuries ago with the printing press, which then evolved into the camera and the computer. I remember the first kind of cameras that I used when growing up were the Polaroid ones which printed out the image after you took them, but they took some time to develop, but that was still quicker than the time it used to take to create a photo with the darkroom process. Now today we can instantly take a photo with our phones with the true color retained, upload them, and send them to everyone we know in an instant, wherever they may be.

What's amazing about photography is that it captures a moment and stores it forever. It can be used for those occasions where you want to remember an event and have something to look back on to help relive the moment in your head, or it can be used to better describe an event to others. It's also helpful for letting us see other works. The chapter talks about how we can see works that we want, whenever we want. Not everyone can go out and see the real Mona Lisa painting, but we can see the printed image of it right on our phones.

Photography and printed images were an amazing discovery, and it would be very hard to picture the world as we know it today without it.

Chapter eight is all about the printed image. Printed images are a great form of art and expression. Printed images capture a moment and allows you to keep that memory for forever. Printed images are also the easiest type of art form. Anyone can grab a camera and take some photographs. This does not mean that printed images are any lesser type of art form. I personally love taking pictures. When I take a nice pictures I always feel accomplished after. I love taking pictures because when you capture a moment you never have to forget about a moment or memory. This is why it is so important to utilize the camera and take as many photographs that you can take.

When thinking about printed images and art I would only think of photographs. But after reading this chapter I realized there are many more aspects to the printed image. This chapter talks about printmaking. I never would have thought of printmaking as printed image art. I also did not realize all the aspects of printmaking. There is engraving, etching, aquatint, mezzotint, and drypoint. I only thought that there was engraving and not all these other types of ways to sketch into something. There are also many aspects of digital imaging. I always thought that you take the picture print it out and then you are done. This chapter shows how there is a lot more to taking pictures. You have to keep in mind the pixels, the resolution, contrast of the photo, and the framing of the photo. After keeping all this in mind you have to use photo-editing software if the picture still is not perfect. Later in the chapter it talk even more about the process of creating an image. You have to keep in mind the light and shadows, the filter on the photograph, and you also have to choose what you are going to print your picture on.

Digital imaging is very interesting because there are so many different types of digital imaging. I like digital printing because I think it is simple, yet can still tell an amazing story.

  16. In reply to the question "who am I?", I am a printmaker, along with many other things. This is by far my most favorite thing to do art related. Printmaking was always my specialty in high school, although I did not make it my concentration. I tried many different types of printmaking including etching, relief prints, graphic transfer, and many others that I can't remember right now. Using linoleum for a stamp was my preferred style. It involves planning: to think of an image or take a picture, get the image onto a piece of paper, and separate it into layers of color. Each layer of color is a different shape on the stamp. Once the last shape is carved and stamped on as the final layer, the piece completely comes together. Its like as if a printer only prints one color on a photo each time it goes through and then you have to work hard for that next color and every time it comes out with a new color it looks more full and real and put together.

I've always been interested in working in a darkroom and have not yet had the chance to. The author didn't go much into photography or the process of developing photos other than giving the definitions. I wasn't familiar with the term "cibachrome" before reading this chapter. I would like to see the process of embedding the dye into the paper.

In the section "Masters of the Printed Image", the only name I recognized was Rembrandt van Rijn. My art history teacher in high school was obsessed with him. He had a real appreciation for his drastic use of intense highlights and shadows. The author even called him "the greatest printmaker". I looked him up after I read this chapter. My teacher mainly focused on pieces that were set in a room or with people so I didn't know that he also painted landscapes. My favorite is the "Landscape with the Rest on the Flight into Egypt.

    Printed Art

This chapter was all about printed art. In terms of types of art photography can be seen as a newer form of art because the cameras were made not to long ago. It’s a rapidly growing art form that virtually anyone can do. Technology is always growing which allows for better pictures that capture detail, as you would see it with your own eyes. Printed art is also seen as printmaking. I really don’t know a lot about printmaking but after looking up pictures on Google it seemed like a cool form of art. I learned that you use sharp tools to craft your pictures. From the pictures I saw online, most of them were black and white, which makes me wonder do these photos have to be colorless.

I think I am most involved with photography over all other forms of art. Snap chat and instagram are two widely used social medias that are centered on photography. It brings out everyone’s artsy side and allows you to connect with your friends with the photos you share. One can argue that instgram is the most popular social media and I think its cool that it has such a huge fan base even though all you do is just post pictures. From the reading it says in order for it to be art it must be printed. I disagree with this statement. I have seen a lot pictures that have not been printed but I would consider art.

  18. Photography is a very common form of art that is seen all around us. Although I personally don’t take pictures for fun or have a fancy camera, I have a lot of friends that do. First off, my sister is big on photography and takes pictures at events, as well as wanting to go to art school. Several of my friends take pictures for fun and their pictures look great. One of my good friends even takes pictures for New York Fashion Week. I also believe the idea that a picture is worth a thousand words. Photography is something, that I believe, captures memories and tells stories. Photography is an art because people will go in very challenging places in order to get the “perfect” shot with the best lighting.
One of the most interesting things that I learned from this chapter is that photography has been around for the last 500 years. It’s interesting that photography went from using a printing press, making newspapers to using digital, wireless technology. Now a days, there are so many ways to share pictures online with friends and family. While these methods may seem fun and exciting, they could also be very dangerous because of who can get their hands on the pictures. While some of these pictures are more “artsy” than others, I would still photography, as a whole, an art.

  19. I started doing dark room photography around middle school and self taught myself how to use a DSLR camera which I've been using for years now. Most photographs are edited now a days and some of them, such as the photos on the cover of national geographic I think are edited too much. Sometimes to the point where they don't look real anymore. Photo editing is supposed to enhance the colors and quality that the camera couldn't catch. I think that if you see something with your own eyes and you thinks its art, capture it. Whatever you are trying to capture appears to have more dynamic range to a human eye than a camera, although technically a camera has more dynamic range. Humans change their focal points very quickly, to the point that we don't actually notice the out of focus portions of most scenes so sometimes what you see and what your camera sees is different. I would definitely consider printed photography to be art. Art can be a real thing or it can be something from your imagination and you can create something unreal with photography, it doesn't mean it isn't art. I do agree that it is very easy to get your hands on a photo that someone else took but we do it all the time without realizing it. Sometimes parts of one persons art becomes part of another persons and while I think everyone deserves credit for something they created, artists take inspiration from each other. I've done printmaking as well and I think it's great. I didn't know all of those terms though, that was interesting to learn.
